Things to Do in L'Ametlla de Mar: A Local Guide

If you're looking for a place on the Costa Daurada where you can slow down, enjoy the Mediterranean and escape some of the busier tourist destinations, L'Ametlla de Mar is definitely worth discovering.
Locally known as La Cala, the town has a strong fishing and maritime character, and its coastline stretches for around 17 kilometres with numerous coves and beaches.
I've been exploring the area since moving here, and one of the things I love most is the variety. You can spend the morning walking along the coast, have a seafood lunch by the harbour and finish the day watching the sunset over the Mediterranean.
Here are some of my favourite things to do in and around L'Ametlla de Mar.
Walk Along the Mediterranean Coast
One of the best ways to experience L'Ametlla de Mar is simply to walk.
The coastline around the town is full of small coves, rocky sections, beaches and beautiful Mediterranean views.
The GR92 coastal trail passes through the area, giving you the opportunity to explore the coastline on foot and discover some of the scenery that makes this part of Catalonia so special.
You don't have to plan a long hike.
Even a short walk along the coast can give you beautiful views and plenty of places to stop and enjoy the sea.
And if you're carrying a camera, you'll probably find yourself stopping quite often.
Discover the Beaches and Hidden Coves
This is probably the biggest attraction of L'Ametlla de Mar.
The municipality has around 17 km of coastline and approximately 26 coves and beaches, ranging from serviced beaches to much more natural and secluded spots.
Some are easy to reach, while others are tucked away along the coastline.
That's part of the fun.
Instead of spending the entire day at one large beach, you can explore different parts of the coast and find your own favourite spot.
For photography, these smaller coves can be especially beautiful because they often feel more intimate and natural.
Explore the Harbour and Fishing Town
L'Ametlla de Mar isn't simply a beach resort.
Its history is closely connected to fishing, and that character is still very much part of the town today.
Take a walk around the harbour and you'll see fishing boats, the marina and the everyday life of a Mediterranean coastal town.
I particularly like this area because it feels authentic.
It's a great place to walk around in the morning, have a coffee or simply sit and watch the boats coming and going.
Discover the Murals and Street Art
One of the things I really enjoy about walking around L'Ametlla de Mar is discovering the murals and colourful pieces of street art around the town.
You might come to L'Ametlla for the Mediterranean, the beaches and the fishing boats, but take a little time to look up and explore the streets too. You'll find walls transformed with large-scale artwork, colourful paintings and creative details that bring a different character to the town.
For photographers, these murals can also make fantastic backgrounds. They add colour and personality to portraits and work particularly well for couples, families and lifestyle photography.
It's another reminder that L'Ametlla isn't just about beautiful beaches — there is plenty of art, local character and creativity to discover if you slow down and explore.
My tip: don't just follow the main tourist routes. Walk through the side streets, look around the corners and keep your camera ready. You never know what you'll find.
Discover the Sant Jordi d'Alfama Area
A little further along the coast is Sant Jordi d'Alfama, an area with a fascinating history and beautiful coastal surroundings.
The town's heritage includes the remains of a medieval castle associated with the Order of Sant Jordi d'Alfama, as well as a later fortress that still stands today.
The combination of history, coastline and open Mediterranean views makes this an interesting place to explore.
It's also a completely different atmosphere from the centre of L'Ametlla.
Explore the Coast Around Calafat
If you have a car, don't limit yourself to the centre of L'Ametlla.
The surrounding coastline offers even more coves, beaches and Mediterranean scenery.
Areas around Calafat and Sant Jordi give you another perspective of the coast and are worth exploring if you're staying for several days.
Sometimes the best places aren't the ones you find on the first page of a travel guide.
Enjoy Fresh Seafood & Eat Like a Local
After spending time by the sea, there's only one thing to do...
Eat seafood.
L'Ametlla de Mar has a long fishing tradition, so seafood is naturally an important part of the local food culture.
Take your time.
Order some local seafood, enjoy a glass of wine and don't rush through lunch.
That's one of the things I love about life on the Mediterranean — sometimes the best part of the day is simply sitting at the table and enjoying it.

Don't Miss the Fishing Boats
And here's something I think visitors should definitely experience if they're staying in L'Ametlla de Mar:
Go to the harbour and watch the fishing boats come back.
L'Ametlla de Mar is still a real fishing town, and the fishing activity is an important part of its identity. The local fish market is where the day's catch is sold by auction, giving you a glimpse into a side of the town that many visitors never see.
And if you're visiting during the right season, you may also have the chance to learn more about the area's famous red tuna. The local Tuna Tour takes visitors out to discover the fishing, biology and gastronomy of bluefin tuna, and even offers the opportunity to swim among them.
It's a completely different experience from simply spending the day on the beach.
Check the local schedule before you go, as fishing activities and tuna experiences are seasonal.
Watch the Sunset
And finally — don't leave before sunset.
This is one of my favourite times of day in L'Ametlla de Mar.
The Mediterranean light becomes softer, the rocks take on warm colours and the whole coastline changes character.
You can watch the sunset from the coast, a beach or one of the many viewpoints around the area.
And if you're here with your family or partner, this is also one of my favourite times for a photography session.
The light is beautiful, but more importantly, people tend to relax as the day slows down.
Visit L'Ametlla Beyond Summer
L'Ametlla de Mar is beautiful in summer, but don't assume that the town is only worth visiting during July and August.
Outside the busiest months, the coastline can feel much quieter and more relaxed.
Spring and autumn can be particularly enjoyable for walking and photography, while the softer light and quieter atmosphere can make the experience feel completely different.
When Is the Best Time for Photography?
For me, early morning and late afternoon are the best times for outdoor photography.
Morning gives you softer light and a peaceful atmosphere.
Late afternoon brings the warm Mediterranean glow that works beautifully for family, couple and vacation photography.
The exact time changes throughout the year, so I always plan sessions around the light rather than simply choosing a fixed time.
