Best Photography Locations in Tarragona

Tarragona Old Town
Tarragona Old Town

Tarragona is one of those places where history and the Mediterranean come together beautifully. Within a relatively small area, you can photograph ancient Roman ruins, charming old streets, historic architecture and the sea.

Whether you're visiting Tarragona with your family, your partner or simply exploring the city, there are plenty of beautiful places to capture your experience.

Here are some of my favorite types of locations and the best times to photograph them.

Tarragona Old Town: Narrow Streets & Historic Architecture

The Old Town is one of my favourite areas for photography in Tarragona. Its narrow streets, stone buildings, balconies and small squares create a completely different atmosphere from the nearby beaches.

The streets also give us plenty of opportunities for natural photographs. Instead of standing and posing, you can simply walk, talk and explore while I capture the moments as they happen.

  • Narrow streets – They create beautiful leading lines and natural frames.

  • Historic buildings – Stone walls, balconies, doors and colorful details add character to photographs.

  • Tarragona Cathedral – The Cathedral and the surrounding streets provide some of the most atmospheric backgrounds in the Old Town.

For couples, the Old Town can create a romantic and intimate atmosphere. For families, it gives us plenty of opportunities for relaxed walking and exploring photographs.

Roman Heritage: A Strong Sense of Place

Tarragona's Roman history is one of the things that makes the city so special.

The ancient Roman remains are not simply attractions to visit — they can also become fantastic photographic backgrounds.

  • Roman Amphitheatre – Overlooking the Mediterranean, the Roman Amphitheatre is one of Tarragona's most impressive landmarks.

  • Roman Walls – The ancient walls and surrounding streets offer interesting textures, shadows and architectural details.

  • Roman Circus – The Roman Circus is another fascinating part of Tarragona's historic centre and can easily be combined with a walk through the Old Town.

If you love history, architecture and photographs that really show where you have been, Tarragona's Roman heritage is hard to beat.

Mediterranean Coastline: Sea, Beaches & Relaxed Photography

Of course, Tarragona isn't only about history.

The Mediterranean is always close by.

The coastline offers a much more relaxed setting for family, couple and vacation photography.

  • Beaches – Sandy beaches and rocky areas give us plenty of space to walk, play and create natural photographs.

  • Harbour & Boats – The harbour adds another Mediterranean element, with boats, reflections and beautiful views.

  • The Sea – Sometimes you don't need anything complicated.

A walk beside the sea, the wind in your hair and the evening light can be enough to create beautiful photographs.

Golden-Hour City Photography: Evening Light and Atmosphere

If I had to choose one time of day for an outdoor photography session, it would usually be late afternoon and around sunset.

The light becomes softer and warmer, which is especially flattering for portraits.

The Old Town takes on beautiful warm tones, while the coastline can provide stunning skies and reflections.

Golden hour works particularly well for:

  • Couples – romantic, warm and intimate photographs.

  • Families – relaxed moments while walking and playing.

  • Vacation photography – photographs that capture not only the people but also the atmosphere of Tarragona.

The exact time depends on the season and location, so I always recommend planning the session around the light rather than simply choosing a fixed time.

Planning Your Photography Session in Tarragona

If you're visiting Tarragona and would like professional photographs, a little planning can make a big difference.

Choose the atmosphere you want

Do you prefer:

Historic streets & architecture?

Roman heritage?

Mediterranean beaches?

A combination of several locations?

I'll help you choose what works best.

Choose the right time

Early morning and late afternoon usually offer the most beautiful light and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Keep your clothing simple

Neutral and natural colours work particularly well with Tarragona's stone architecture and Mediterranean surroundings.

And most importantly — don't worry about posing.

I'll guide you through the session and give you simple things to do rather than asking you to stand still and smile at the camera.

Tarragona has something for almost every type of photography session — historic streets, Roman heritage, Mediterranean beaches and beautiful evening light.

Whether you're planning a family holiday, a romantic getaway or simply want to remember your visit to Tarragona, I'd love to help you capture it.

I'll also help you choose the location, the best time and the right type of session for your plans.
